Cool Link: ESL Heaven

I found ESL Heaven through one of my Linkedin contacts, Daniel James. The co-founder of ESL Heaven also works at a university here in Korea.

The site has information for both students and teachers. Students can find great resources such as idioms, phrasal verbs, English lessons, and essay writing help. Teachers can find jobs, country guides, games, lesson ideas, and classroom management help. They can also post their CVs.

ESL Heaven also has a handful of forums in English, Spanish, Korean, and Chinese. With over 125,000 register users since they've started about 2 years ago, ESL Heaven is going to take the ESL and EFL community by storm. I know they'll be expanding their site soon. Here's hoping they'll have reviews about schools and TEFL certificates.

Cool Link: Starfall

Get kids excited about reading at an early age with Starfall. They use phonics to help young learners and children learn how to read.

Their colourful site takes your students through reading, from learning the ABCs to phonics to reading short stories.

They also have other neat things such as a calendar, 100 Day, a curriculum, and interactive activities, such as making a gingerbread man, snowman, or turkey.

If you teach preschool, you've got to take a look at Squigly's Playhouse. From games to crafts, brain teasers, season and holiday to writing, you'll find lots of material here. It's free and updated pretty often. If you're looking for more worksheets, they've got an affiliated site: Squigly Jr that has shapes, letters, numbers and more. So take a look at the site, you're sure to find something that you can use in class.

Cool Link: StoryPlace

Part of the Charlotte Mechklenburg Library, StoryPlace has great material in English and Spanish for young learners and primary students.

They've got themes for the pre-school library as well as online stories and activities as well as take home activities and reading lists. They've got useful info for parents as well. For example, if you go to the primary section, you'll find activities, tales, and reading lists. Reading is great and it's becoming overlooked due to technology, but StoryPlace is a great way to merge these two.

With resources in English as well as foreign languages (Spanish, German, and French) the Literacy Center Education Network has lots of material for you to use for free. From learning letters, numbers, colours, shapes and more, they have educational material for preschoolers and young learners.

They have a section for parents and teachers that will help you make the most of their resources. Within this section they also have info for EFL and ESL students. It's a very simple, well organised site.

Cool Link: Preschool Printables

Continuing on with the preschool theme, we have Preschool Printables. If you're looking for worksheets to use with your young learners, then look no further than Preschool Printables. It's got lots more than worksheets.

You can find resources for awards, games, bulletin boards, calendars, newsletters, lesson plans, and a lot more. The downside? It's not updated that often. Nonetheless, it's free, so you can't really complain.

They've also got a couple sister sites: Preschool Education, Ask the Preschool Teacher, and Preschool Coloring Book, so be sure to check them all out.

Cool Link: Preschool Express

Continuing on with the preschool theme that we've had for a while, we've got Preschool Express. I really like this site because of its colours and the fact that it's well organised.

On the left they have stations, such as party, toddler, games, food, numbers, music, stories, and a whole lot more. In the middle is the What's New Section. Right now it's what's new for fall. Then on the right you have more info about the what's new section, such as books picks for fall, fall patterns, and plan ahead calendars. If you're teaching kids or young learners, you're going to love this site!

It's pretty well organised and updated often. Their material works well with PCs as well as Macs so you won't have any compatibility issues. They have 3 sister sites as well that are worth looking at: Ask the Preschool Teacher, Preschool Coloring Book, and Preschool Printables.

Cool Link: Edu Place

Mainly used to supplement Houghton Mifflin Harcourt materials, there are other resources on Edu Place that might interest you. It targets preschool to Grade 6. If you're teaching in a Spanish speaking country, you might want to check out their Bilingual Resources.

They also have interesting things such as graphic organisers, spelling lists, current events, monthly themes, outline maps and a whole lot more. In addition to resources for teachers, they also have things for student and families. So if you teach children or young learners, check out their site.

It's got everything you need all in one place. It's easy to navigate and has a simple theme. There aren't flashy adverts either, just good resources. It's no wonder they've won awards for their site.

Cool Link: Discovery Education

Discovery Education has resources for administrators, teachers, parents and students. Students can get help with their homework or check out some of their neat programmes they have such as Young Scientist Challenge or Explore the Blue.

They also have some great resources for teachers. Whether you teach young learners or high schoolers, there's something useful that you could use in your class. Cool Link: ABC Teach

If you teach K-8 or at an international school, then take a look at ABC Teach. They've got lots of free materials, like subjects, reading comprehension, holidays, ABCs, interactive, as well as sections divided by levels, and even a special needs section. It's easy to navigate, bright, and colourful.

There is also a tools section which allows you to generate all types of worksheets such as games like bingo and sudoku, or activity sheets, spelling, and ABCs.

They also have a paid membership section which costs about $40 a year. They also have discounts for groups, schools, and districts.

Cool Link: British Council Learn English Kids

The British Council has long been known for its quality English programme and now they have a website dedicated to children: Learn English Kids. It's simple and colourful with games, multimedia, reading and writing, crafts, and things you can explore.

At the bottom of the page is a list of all the labels they have so you can easily find what you're searching for. I have to say I like this page a lot more than the adult British Council website.

Cool Link: TESL Jobs

With articles about TEFL and TESL, forums, resources, CVs, jobs, and basic information about teaching in different countries, TESL Jobs offers lots of information for teachers. I honestly think that there are way too many adverts up though and many of the links I clicked on weren't working.

Their discussion forum is pretty good and has useful info about scams, which seem to be popping up all over the place. It's not very active though. They also have a couple of articles about TEFLing, but not that many.

As far as jobs go, employers can post for free. They also have a warning telling teacher to be wary of scams, which is good. They have separate boards for China and Korea. There are a lot of jobs in Asia, as well as all over the world. Jobs expire between 30 and 90 days, but the posts remain up even though the job offer has expired.

Overall, I think their website is nice, but not fantastic.
